Day 39: Relax, Compete in Tournament, Relax
It was another day of smooth jazz. The only thing on the agenda was lounge around on the beach. We had our fill of the sun yesterday and most of the class was content in the shade. Sam, ever the entrepreneur, invested in some beach toys and built a fantastic sandcastle with Olivia and Antoine.
The teachers did add one small thing to the agenda. Before 11am, when the sun turns from bake to broil, we brought the whole squad together for a Mei Academy Tournament. We drew teams of students from a hat and let the games begin. In a half hour blitz of short competitions, each pair competed in the frisbee toss, untangling a human knot, a hopping and crab-walking relay race, twenty-one against the dealer, a rock, scissors, paper showdown, and the team cheer event. Points were assigned for the victors of each battle.
The day was free to relax, nap, jump in the pool, play cards, and enjoy the beach. As the sunset we met up for the finale of the Tournament. The teams of students competed in a test of riddles, trivia, a dance choreography showdown, and a lightning luck round. In the end two teams had a final showdown: Ilana and Sydney took on Yale and Tia. In a callback to yesterday’s favourite game they played keep ups in the pool. Each pair was desperate to keep the ball in the air with their partner. When the splashes settled, Team 360 (Yale and Tia) were victorious and spun madly in celebration in the pool. We took some time to change for dinner and walked down the beach to our favourite restaurants. It’s incredible how Sihanoukville has flown by as we begin the second half of our journey. Tomorrow, onward to Bangkok, Thailand.
